Join Batalá

Thank you for your interest in joining Batalá. We are currently closed for new members, but we are gauging interest and collecting information from interested women. Please fill out this form to let us know a little about you. The form will collect your email, which we will use to let you know when we are open for new members.

Want to join the band and become one of us?

Who can be part of the band?
Any women older than 21 years old of age, regardless of race, religion, income or musical experience.

What if I have never played an instrument before?
90% of the women in the band never played any instruments in their lives. We’ll teach how to play and you will be performing with us in no time.

Does it cost anything to join the band?
While being a member of the band requires a hefty time commitment, we try to make the financial commitment as minimal as possible. Aspiring members must purchase a Batalá Starter Kit after participating in a few rehearsals. We’ll provide you with the instrument and costumes for free!

What is the Batalá Starter Kit?

When you join we will provide you with your instrument and your costume for free. We do however require a security deposit check of $350 that will not be deposited unless your instrument and costume are lost. This check will be returned if you leave the band.

The starter kit you will need to buy when joining the band consists of:

  1. 4 Batalá t-shirts ($10-$25 each) – These t-shirts are different in color and in design and are necessary for Batalá’s performances. If you can’t afford to buy them all at once, no problem, they can be bought one at a time. This means that you can buy them throughout the year, as we come up with new styles.
  2. 2 Batalá CDs ($10-$15 each) – You will need the CDs in order to listen and learn the songs.
  3. Belts ($20-$35) – These belts can also be purchased somewhere else if you wish.
  4. Mallets ($20)

Also you will need knee and hearing protections, and these can be purchased in any sport, musical or hardware stores.

Please keep in mind that all band proceeds go toward providing instruments and costumes for the members. Joining Batalá is free of charge to all women regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation or musical experience, however the purchase of the Batalá Starter Kit is necessary. Please, let us know if you have any questions or concerns and we will be happy the help you.
